Looking for Other Options to Record Movies and Television Programs

I really do not like my cable company. Every time I call them to ask them for help with anything, they give me very little if any help. I know that I need to use them for some things, but the less money I can give them, the better. I am looking for other options to record movies and television shows and have been looking into DVR software. If I could take DVR service off of my list of things that I pay the cable company for and have more storage than what they are giving me, that would be absolutely perfect!
